What Can You Do To Diminish Implicit Bias?
Research has shown that healthcare professionals’ biases can lead to disparities in healthcare. This presentation aims to raise awareness among healthcare professionals about implicit bias and how it can impact the quality of care they provide. The presenter will share personal stories, engage participants in an exercise to explore their initial thoughts when specific individuals walk into the OR, analyze a case scenario, and lastly provide some strategies to diminish implicit bias.

Transgender Care: A Door-to-Door Experience With a Keen Focus on the Perioperative Setting
This presentation aims to provide an experiential, door-to-door, roadmap of practice guidelines relevant to providing culturally sensitive care for the transgender population, with a particular focus in the perioperative setting. Approximately, 71 percent of transgender patients use the emergency department as the primary source of health care with over half reporting negative experiences when receiving care. Studies on patient experience recognize health equity and respect as pivotal core values towards healthcare systems building a positive and trusting relationship with the diverse communities they serve. Healthcare organizations should strive to integrate best practices into their business and clinical models, including the use of appropriate terminologies, such as preferred names and pronouns, and the collection of racial, ethnic, language, sexual orientation, and gender identity data to track patient experiences across diversity dimensions.

Going Beyond Opioids: Redefining Pain Management
The opioid crisis has prompted a critical examination of surgical pain management strategies. This shift is evident through heightened advocacy and education efforts, leading to a notable shift in our approach to addressing surgical pain. This presentation emphasizes the pressing need for healthcare professionals to challenge conventional methods and embrace progressive solutions to pain management. By advocating for comprehensive patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration, we can navigate towards a future where opioid sparing becomes the standard of care, ensuring safer and more effective surgical outcomes.

Entering the Restricted Zone — Experiences of Guiding Students into the Operating Room
This evidence-based, educational and experiential discussion will highlight both how and why we place students (nursing-all levels and surgical technology) into OR rotations, capstones, and observation days. The OR Educator plays a key role in ensuring that students are prepared for their time in the OR and to make sure that OR personnel are prepared and supportive when hosting students of many differing skill levels. How we support our staff to be good hosts and preceptors are crucial to the overall goal of helping to have a well-educated and plentiful workforce ready to take care of the next generation of surgical patients.
